Kumukanda

Kumukanda (2017) is the award-winning debut collection by Kayo Chingonyi, a poet born in Zambia in 1987 who moved to the United Kingdom as a child after the death of his parents. The Cambridge IGCSE set selection is 15 poems from the collection, prescribed for 0992 Paper 1, Section A. The poems explore black British and Zambian identity, race, masculinity, music, grief and belonging, drawing on hip-hop and garage culture, jazz, and the Luvale initiation rite that gives the collection its title.

The title

'Kumukanda', the poet's note explains, translates as 'initiation': it is the name given to the rites by which a young man of his people passes into adulthood. The title poem turns on the fact that the speaker, raised in England, never underwent this rite, and so imagines an 'alternate self' who stayed, a central image of divided identity that runs through the collection.
