A Streetcar Named Desire

A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) is Tennessee Williams's most famous play, a modern American tragedy of desire, illusion and cruelty. The fragile, fading Southern belle Blanche DuBois arrives, penniless and haunted, at the cramped New Orleans home of her pregnant sister Stella and Stella's powerful, brutal husband Stanley Kowalski. The collision between Blanche's world of fantasy and gentility and Stanley's world of raw physical force destroys her.

Setting

The whole play unfolds in and around the Kowalskis' two-room flat in the run-down Elysian Fields quarter of New Orleans, just after the Second World War. The vibrant, sweaty, multi-ethnic, working-class city, alive with the 'blue piano' of the streets, is a world away from the lost plantation, Belle Reve ('beautiful dream'), and embodies the new America that is displacing Blanche's decayed Old South.

The central movement

Blanche, who has lost the family estate and fled a scandalous past, tries to reinvent herself and to find refuge and a husband in Stanley's friend Mitch. Stanley, resenting and distrusting her, investigates and exposes her history of promiscuity and her dismissal from teaching, destroying her hopes with Mitch. On the night Stella gives birth, Stanley rapes Blanche; her fragile mind, already cracking, gives way entirely. In the final scene she is taken to a mental asylum, and Stella, unable to believe the truth and survive, lets her go.
