Antony and Cleopatra

Antony and Cleopatra (written about 1606-07) is one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, a sweeping drama of love and empire. The Roman triumvir Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of the Roman world, is torn between his political duty in Rome and his consuming passion for Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. Their love, magnificent and self-destructive, plays out against the power struggle with the cold, calculating Octavius Caesar, and ends in military defeat and the lovers' suicides.

Setting

The play has an enormous geographical scope, shifting rapidly between Rome and Egypt, and ranging across the Mediterranean world to Athens, Misenum and the sea-battle at Actium. These places are also opposed values: Rome stands for duty, reason, austerity and empire; Egypt for pleasure, fertility, theatricality and the life of the senses. Antony's tragedy is enacted in his movement between these two worlds.

The central movement

Antony, neglecting Rome for Cleopatra, is recalled by political crisis, marries Caesar's sister Octavia to cement an alliance, then abandons her and returns to Egypt. War with Caesar follows; against advice Antony fights at sea, and when Cleopatra's fleet flees at Actium he follows her, ruining himself. Defeated and believing Cleopatra dead, Antony falls on his sword; she, to escape being led in triumph through Rome, dies royally by the bite of an asp. In death the lovers achieve a transcendent grandeur that the disordered world of politics could not give them.
