Fractions, Decimals And Percentages

Overview

A half, \(0.5\) and \(50\%\) are three names for the same idea. Fractions, decimals and percentages are simply different costumes worn by the same quantity, and being able to change costume at will is one of the most useful skills in everyday mathematics.

In this lesson you will convert smoothly between all three forms, recognize the common equivalences worth memorizing, and order a mixed list of fractions, decimals and percentages with confidence. These conversions are the backbone of money, ratio and data work across the whole syllabus.

Objectives

  1. Use and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, and recognize equivalences between them.

Lesson Note

Real information arrives in mixed forms: a discount as a percentage, a measurement as a decimal, a recipe as a fraction. To compare or combine them you must first put them into the same form. Fluent conversion makes this automatic, and it removes the guesswork from comparing values that look different but may be equal.
