Speaking gets all the attention, but half of the oral endorsement is listening. The candidates who do best in the discussion are the ones who really hear what the examiner says, including what is meant but not spelled out, and then respond to that, not to a half-heard version of it. Listening is not waiting for your turn to talk. It is an active skill, and it is assessed.
This lesson trains the listening half of the conversation. You will learn to catch implied meaning as well as the literal words, to respond to the question that was actually asked, to build on another speaker's ideas rather than ignore them, and to use the small spoken-language strategies that keep an exchange flowing. Annotated examples show the difference between hearing a question and merely waiting for it to end.
