Solids, Liquids And Gases: Units

Overview

Every equation in physics only works when the quantities going into it are measured in the right units. Mixing up grams with kilograms or centimetres with metres is one of the fastest ways to lose marks on a calculation, and it happens more often than you might expect.

This lesson gives you the complete set of SI and derived units that appear across the Solids, Liquids and Gases section of the Edexcel IGCSE. You will practise converting between related units, learn how to spot when a value needs converting before substitution, and build the reflexes that keep unit errors out of your exam work.

Lesson Note

A student calculates the density of a metal block and gets 7800. Is that a lot or a little? Without a unit the number is meaningless. Worse, if the mass was entered in grams instead of kilograms, the number itself is wrong. Units are not a label you stick on at the end - they are part of the answer from the very first line of working.
