Parallel Lines

Overview

Parallel lines run in the same direction and never meet, and in coordinate geometry that single fact has a neat consequence: they have exactly the same gradient. That makes finding the equation of a line parallel to a given one quick and reliable.

In this lesson you will find the gradient and equation of a straight line parallel to a given line, using the key idea that parallel lines share a gradient.

Objectives

  1. Find the gradient and equation of a straight line parallel to a given line.

Lesson Note

Recognising that parallel lines have equal gradients turns a geometric idea into a one-line calculation, and it sets up the contrast with perpendicular lines.
