Ideal Gas Molecules

Overview

Gas behaviour underpins everything from weather systems to car engines. The kinetic model explains how randomly moving molecules create pressure and why heating a sealed container raises that pressure.

In this lesson you will learn how gas molecules move and exert pressure, the kelvin temperature scale, absolute zero, how temperature affects molecular speed and kinetic energy, and the quantitative relationships between pressure, volume and temperature.

Objectives

  1. Explain how molecules in a gas have random motion and exert a force and hence a pressure on the walls of a container
  2. Understand why there is an absolute zero of temperature which is -273 degrees C
  3. Describe the Kelvin scale of temperature and be able to convert between the Kelvin and Celsius scales
  4. Understand why an increase in temperature results in an increase in the average speed of gas molecules
  5. Know that the Kelvin temperature of a gas is proportional to the average kinetic energy of its molecules
  6. Explain the qualitative relationships between pressure, volume and temperature for a fixed amount of gas
  7. Use the relationship between pressure and Kelvin temperature of a fixed mass of gas at constant volume
  8. Use the relationship between pressure and volume of a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature

Lesson Note

Picture a box full of tiny balls bouncing off the walls at high speed in random directions. That is essentially what a gas is. The collisions of these molecules with the container walls create pressure, and the faster the molecules move, the greater the pressure.
