Types Of Peripheral Devices - Storage
Overview
Every photograph, document, song and application on your devices needs somewhere to live when the power goes off. Storage technology determines how much you can keep, how quickly you can reach it and whether it will still be there in ten years. Choosing the right storage for a task is one of the most practical decisions in ICT.
In this lesson you will distinguish between storage devices and the media they read, compare hard disk drives with solid-state and optical alternatives, and master the binary-based units that describe capacity. You will also practise the kind of conversion calculations that Edexcel regularly tests in Paper 1.
Objectives
- Be able to differentiate between storage devices and the media used to store data
- Know the characteristics of hard disk drives (HDD), solid state drives (SSD), optical disk drives
- Know that storage devices can be internal or external
- Know about types of storage media such as hard disks, optical disks (CD, DVD, Blu-ray), flash memory devices, magnetic tape
- Know that storage media can be recordable/write once (R) and rewritable (R/W)
- Understand the terms describing the capacity of storage such as bit, byte and multiples of these (kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, tebibytes)
