Gas Exchange
Overview
Every cell in your body needs a constant supply of oxygen to release energy from glucose, and every cell produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. The lungs are where this vital swap happens: oxygen flows into the blood while carbon dioxide flows out, driven entirely by diffusion.
In this lesson you will learn the structure of the thorax, how the intercostal muscles and diaphragm drive ventilation, and how the alveoli are perfectly adapted to make gas exchange as fast as possible. These concepts are tested across Papers 1 and 2 and link directly to respiration and transport.
Objectives
- Describe the structure of the thorax, including the ribs, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli and pleural membranes
- Understand the role of the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm in ventilation
- Explain how alveoli are adapted for gas exchange by diffusion between air in the lungs and blood in capillaries
