Use Of Symbols
Overview
Algebra begins with a simple but powerful idea: a letter can stand in for a number you do not yet know, or for a quantity that can change. Once you accept that convention, every rule of arithmetic you already know transfers directly to algebraic expressions, letting you describe patterns, build formulae and solve equations.
This topic establishes the language you will use throughout the rest of the course. You will learn how expressions, equations, formulae and identities differ, how to read and write index notation, and how to apply the index laws to simplify expressions efficiently. Higher tier students extend these ideas to fractional and negative indices.
