Theme Three: Current And Future Study And Employment

Overview

Theme three is the only theme on the specification that is mostly about things that have not happened yet. It covers your studies now, your life at school or college now, and then two topics that point forwards: education post-16, and jobs, career choices and ambitions. That forward tilt is the whole reason it matters linguistically. It is the theme that forces you to use the future, and the specification asks in three separate places for language that refers to past, present and future events.

This lesson works through the four topics, builds the six ways English actually expresses a future plan and shows which one to reach for when, and then handles the two exam tasks this theme keeps producing: the email or letter about something at school, and the listening gap fill on a talk about somebody's career. It ends with a letter marked for Language alone against the exam board's published six mark grid.

Objectives

  1. Theme three covers the following four topics: Topic 1: My studies Topic 2: Life at school/college Topic 3: Education post-16 Topic 4: Jobs, career choices and ambitions

Lesson Note

Theme three covers the following four topics: My studies; Life at school or college; Education post-16; and Jobs, career choices and ambitions. Unlike the other two themes, none of the four carries sub-topics, so the headings are the whole of the guidance you are given.
