Defining
Overview
Once a need has been identified, the project has to be pinned down into something you can actually design against. The defining stage is where a loose problem becomes a precise, testable target. You face up to the constraints that limit what is possible, you gather and organise your research, you turn raw data into clear charts and findings, and finally you write a specification: the measurable list of everything the product must do and be.
This note covers the constraints created by knowledge, resources and outside sources; how to collect and organise research; how to interpret and present data using diagrams, flowcharts, graphs and test results; and how to analyse all of that into a sharp design specification. A good specification is the backbone of the rest of the project, because every later idea is judged against it.
Objectives
- identify and respond to the constraints created by knowledge, resource availability and/or external sources which may influence proposed designs
- collect and organise research information relevant to the solution of design problems
- interpret and present data (e.g. diagrams, flowcharts, graphs, experimental and test results)
- analyse data and research to produce specifications for design problems which they, or others, have identified.
