Overview

How fast is something changing? Over a stretch of a journey, the average speed answers that question, and the same idea works for any function. The average rate of change measures how much the output changes for each unit of input across an interval, capturing the overall trend between two points.

In this lesson you will calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a function over a specified interval. You will see that it is exactly the slope of the straight line joining the two endpoints, and learn to read what that number tells you about the situation.
