How Our Energy Is Produced

Overview

Flick a switch and the light comes on, but where did that energy begin? It might be coal burned three hundred kilometres away, sunlight caught on a rooftop, water tumbling through a dam, or heat rising from deep in the Earth. Every energy source falls into one of two camps: those that run out and those that renew, and one source, fuelwood, can be either.

In this lesson you will learn to classify every major energy source as renewable or non-renewable, understand how each one is generated, and see why fuelwood sits awkwardly between the two. This classification underpins everything else in the energy theme.

Objectives

  1. Types of energy: • renewable: biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric power (HEP), solar, tidal, wave, wind • non-renewable: fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil), nuclear • fuelwood, which can be either renewable or non-renewable.
