Powers And Roots

Overview

Squaring, cubing and taking roots are among the most-used operations in all of mathematics. They turn up the moment you work with area and volume, and they are the gateway to indices, standard form and Pythagoras' theorem. Being quick and accurate with powers and roots saves time in almost every paper.

In this lesson you will calculate squares, cubes and higher powers, and find square roots, cube roots and other roots, both by recognising common values and by using a calculator efficiently. You will also learn to estimate a root that is not exact, which is a frequent exam check.

Objectives

  1. Calculate with the following: squares square roots cubes cube roots other powers and roots of numbers.

Lesson Note

Powers are a shorthand for repeated multiplication, and roots undo them. Recognising the common squares and cubes on sight, and using the power and root keys on your calculator correctly, removes a whole class of slow, error-prone arithmetic from the rest of the course.
