Expressions And Formulae
Overview
Expressions and formulae are the building blocks of algebra. An expression uses letters and numbers to represent a calculation, while a formula links variables with an equals sign to model real-world relationships such as area, speed or cost. Mastering these ideas lets you translate word problems into compact symbolic statements that can be evaluated, simplified or solved.
In this topic you will learn how letters stand for unknowns and variables, how to write algebraic expressions using correct notation, how to substitute values (including negatives, decimals and fractions) into expressions and formulae, and how to rearrange a formula to make a different variable the subject.
