Respiration
Overview
Every living cell needs a continuous supply of energy to drive processes like muscle contraction, protein synthesis, and cell division. That energy comes from respiration, a set of chemical reactions that release energy from glucose. Importantly, respiration is not the same as breathing: it happens inside cells, not inside lungs.
In this lesson you will compare aerobic and anaerobic pathways, learn the word and balanced symbol equations for each, and explore how ATP acts as the universal energy currency of the cell. These reactions underpin almost every other topic in biology, and Edexcel tests them as short-answer and extended-writing questions across both papers.
