Money And Banking

Overview

Imagine trying to buy lunch with a sack of rice, or paying your school fees in chickens. Before money, people had to barter, and trade only happened when two people each wanted exactly what the other had. Money swept that problem away, and the banks that handle it quietly keep the whole economy running.

In this lesson you will learn the forms, functions and characteristics of money, then look inside the banking system: what a central bank does for a whole country and what commercial banks do for everyday customers and firms. By the end you will be able to explain why money is one of the greatest inventions in history and how banks turn deposits into the lifeblood of spending and investment.

Lesson Note

Money and banks sit beneath almost every other topic: prices, saving, borrowing, interest rates and monetary policy all assume a working money and banking system. Understanding what money does, and who manages it, makes the macroeconomy far easier to follow.
