Electromagnetic Induction

Overview

Every power station, every bicycle dynamo and every wireless charger relies on the same principle: moving a conductor through a magnetic field (or changing the field through a conductor) generates a voltage. This is electromagnetic induction.

In this lesson you will learn how an induced voltage is produced, how generators use rotating magnets or coils to generate electricity, and what factors affect the size of the induced voltage.

Objectives

  1. Know that a voltage is induced in a conductor or a coil when it moves through a magnetic field or when a magnetic field changes through it
  2. Describe the generation of electricity by the rotation of a magnet within a coil of wire and of a coil of wire within a magnetic field

Lesson Note

In the previous topic you saw how a current in a magnetic field produces a force (the motor effect). Electromagnetic induction is the reverse: movement in a magnetic field produces a voltage. This single idea powers the entire electrical grid.
