Place – Distribution Channels:

Overview

Even the best product fails if customers cannot get it. Place, one of the 4 Ps, is about how a product travels from the producer to the final customer. Choosing the right route can cut costs, reach more buyers and decide whether a launch succeeds.

This lesson explains the main distribution channels, from using wholesalers and retailers to selling direct, with their advantages and disadvantages. By the end you will be able to recommend and justify the best channel for a given product and business.

Objectives

  1. Advantages and disadvantages of different channels, e.g. use of wholesalers, retailers or direct to consumers
  2. Recommend and justify an appropriate distribution channel in given circumstances

Lesson Note

The channel a business chooses affects its costs, its price and how many customers it can reach. The wrong channel can make a product too expensive or impossible to find. Examiners ask you to recommend a channel, so the judgement matters.
