Incomplete Records
Overview
Not every business keeps a full set of double-entry books. A market trader might keep only a cash box and a notebook of who owes what; a small shopkeeper might have a bank statement and little else. When the year end arrives and the owner still wants to know their profit, the accountant has to reconstruct the missing figures from whatever fragments of information do exist.
In this lesson you will learn how to calculate profit for the year purely by comparing opening and closing equity, how to use control accounts to reconstruct revenue and purchases when no sales or purchases day book was kept, and how to bring both techniques together to prepare a full income statement and statement of financial position from incomplete records.
