The Periodic Table

Overview

Over a hundred elements have been discovered, and the Periodic Table organises every one of them in a pattern that reveals their properties at a glance. Knowing where an element sits in the table tells you whether it is a metal or a non-metal, how many outer-shell electrons it has, and how it is likely to react.

In this lesson you will learn how elements are arranged by atomic number into groups and periods, how to use the table to distinguish metals from non-metals, and why elements in the same group share similar chemical properties.

Lesson Note

In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the known elements by atomic mass and noticed a repeating pattern of properties. The modern Periodic Table keeps that insight but orders elements by atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus) instead. This ordering produces columns and rows that group elements with similar behaviour together.
