Leaf Structure

Overview

A leaf is a solar panel and a food factory rolled into one. Almost everything about its shape, from its broad flat blade to the microscopic pores on its underside, is an adaptation for one job: capturing light and raw materials to make food efficiently.

In this lesson you will learn why leaves are broad and thin, identify every part of a dicotyledonous leaf in section, and explain how each part (from the waxy cuticle to the packed palisade cells and the gas-exchanging stomata) is suited to photosynthesis.

Objectives

  1. State that most leaves have a large surface area and are thin, and explain how these features are adaptations for photosynthesis
  2. Identify in diagrams and images the following structures in the leaf of a dicotyledonous plant: chloroplasts, cuticle, guard cells and stomata, upper and lower epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, air spaces, vascular bundles, xylem and phloem
