Physics: Forces And Motion: Units

Overview

Every calculation in forces and motion relies on choosing the right units. Using metres when the question gives centimetres, or forgetting that acceleration is measured in metres per second squared, can cost easy marks on the exam.

This reference covers the seven SI units you need for the forces and motion section of the Edexcel specification: kilogram, metre, metre per second, metre per second squared, newton, second and newton per kilogram.

Objectives

  1. Use the following units: kilogram (kg), metre (m), metre/second (m/s), metre/second2 (m/s2), newton (N), second (s) and newton/kilogram (N/kg)

Lesson Note

Physics equations only give correct answers when every quantity is in its standard SI unit. The forces and motion section of the Edexcel specification uses seven units. Memorise each one and practise converting from everyday units (e.g. kilometres, grams, minutes) into SI before substituting into any formula.
