The Main Hydrological Characteristics And Processes Which Operate In Rivers And Drainage

Overview

Every drop of rain that falls on a hillside has somewhere to go. Some soaks into the soil, some trickles slowly underground, and some races over the surface into a stream. Trace these journeys and you have the story of a drainage basin: a single river system fed by every slope that drains towards it. Understand the basin and you understand why rivers flood, why they carve valleys, and why the water you drink is never far from the sky it fell from.

This lesson builds the vocabulary and the mechanics you need for the whole rivers theme. You will learn the parts of a river and its basin, how discharge, velocity and the channel are linked, how water moves through the basin as part of the water cycle, and exactly how a river erodes, transports and deposits its load.

Objectives

  1. Characteristics of rivers and drainage basins: the long profile, width, depth, speed of flow/velocity, discharge, wetted perimeter, channel, watershed, tributary, confluence, source, mouth.
  2. The Bradshaw model.
  3. How the drainage basin operates within the water cycle.
  4. Processes which operate in a drainage basin: precipitation, interception, infiltration, percolation, overland flow, channel flow, throughflow, groundwater flow, transpiration, evaporation, evapotranspiration.
  5. Processes which operate within a river: • erosion; hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, solution • transportation; traction, suspension, saltation, solution • deposition.
