Mathematics (9-1) - 0980 CIE

Sequences

Overview

A sequence is a list of numbers that follows a rule, and spotting that rule is one of the most satisfying skills in mathematics. Once you can describe a sequence with a formula for its nth term, you can jump straight to the 100th term without writing out the first 99.

In this lesson you will continue sequences, recognise patterns including the term-to-term rule, and find and use the nth term of linear and (at Extended) simple quadratic and cubic sequences.

Objectives

  1. Continue a given number sequence or pattern.
  2. Recognise patterns in sequences, including the term-to-term rule, and relationships between different sequences.
  3. Find and use the nth term of the following sequences: (a) linear (b) simple quadratic (c) simple cubic.
  4. Find and use the nth term of sequences. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

Finding a general rule for a pattern is the heart of algebra. The nth term formula turns a list into a single expression you can use for any position.
