Trigonometric Functions

Overview

Beyond right-angled triangles, the sine, cosine and tangent become functions you can graph for any angle. Their graphs are smooth, repeating waves, and recognising their shape lets you read off values and solve trigonometric equations.

In this lesson (Extended tier) you will recognise, sketch and interpret the graphs of y = sin x, y = cos x and y = tan x for 0 to 360 degrees, and solve trigonometric equations over that range.

Objectives

  1. Recognise, sketch and interpret the following graphs for 0° ⩽ x ⩽ 360°: y = sin x, y = cos x, y = tan x.
  2. Solve trigonometric equations involving sin x, cos x or tan x, for 0° ⩽ x ⩽ 360°.

Lesson Note

The trig graphs describe anything that repeats: tides, sound, alternating current. Knowing their shape is also the key to solving trig equations, which can have more than one answer.
