Science Double Award - 4SD0 PearsonEdexcel

Physics: Waves: Units

Overview

Wave calculations require just five units, but getting them wrong can throw your answer out by a factor of a thousand. Wavelengths given in nanometres, frequencies in kilohertz, angles in degrees - each needs careful handling before it goes into an equation.

This reference covers the five units for the waves section of the Edexcel specification: degree, hertz, metre, metre per second and second.

Objectives

  1. Use the following units: degree, hertz (Hz), metre (m), metre/second (m/s) and second (s)

Lesson Note

Waves questions test your ability to link frequency, wavelength, speed and period. Each quantity has a standard unit, and each unit has common non-standard alternatives that appear in exam questions - radio frequencies in kHz or MHz, light wavelengths in nm, ultrasound periods in ms. This lesson collects all five units in one place and shows how they connect through the two central wave equations, \(v = f\lambda\) and \(T = \frac{1}{f}\).
