Rural Environments Need To Adapt To Be Socially, Economically And Environmentally Sustainable
Overview
Almost three quarters of English farm businesses now earn money from something other than farming. A shed becomes a workshop, a field becomes a campsite, a roof becomes a solar array. That is diversification, and it is the clearest evidence that rural economies survive by changing.
This topic asks a harder question than 'what could be done'. It asks who does it, at what scale, and whether the result is genuinely sustainable across all three pillars: social, economic and environmental. You will work through diversification, a menu of sustainability strategies, and the very different roles played by governments, international organisations, NGOs and local communities in Cornwall and in rural Bihar.
Objectives
- The diversification of farming to generate new income streams: GM crops, specialist crops and food, organic farming, recreation and leisure
- The range of possible strategies aimed at making rural living more sustainable and improving the quality of life (soil and air quality, water supplies, crop yields, health, employment and housing) for the chosen rural environment
- Role of different groups of people (national and local government, IGOs, NGOs and local communities) in managing the social, economic and environmental challenges within the chosen rural environment
- Case studies of rural environments in a developed country and in a developing country or an emerging country
