Demonstrate An Awareness Of Communication Barriers:

Overview

A manager sends an urgent email, but the worker never opens it; an instruction is buried in jargon nobody understands; a message passes down such a long chain that its meaning is twisted by the time it arrives. These are communication barriers, and they cost businesses time, money and mistakes every single day.

In this lesson you will learn how communication barriers arise at each stage of the communication process, what problems ineffective communication causes, and the practical ways managers can reduce or remove those barriers. By the end you will be able to spot why a message has failed and recommend how to fix it.

Lesson Note

Communication only counts as effective once the person receiving the message has actually grasped it. When communication breaks down, instructions are missed, mistakes are made, time and money are wasted, and staff can become demotivated. Exam questions frequently ask you to identify communication barriers and suggest how to overcome them, so a clear grasp of the process pays off.
