Sexual Reproduction In Plants (continued)

Overview

Pollination only delivers the pollen to the doorstep. The real union of male and female happens next, hidden inside the ovary, when a pollen nucleus fuses with a nucleus in an ovule. From that single fusion a whole new plant can grow, but only if the seed later meets the right conditions to wake up.

In this lesson you will pin down fertilisation in plants, follow the pollen tube on its journey down the style to the ovule, list the adaptations that make insect- and wind-pollinated flowers good at their jobs, and investigate exactly what a seed needs to germinate: water, oxygen and a suitable temperature.

Objectives

  1. State that fertilisation occurs when a pollen nucleus fuses with a nucleus in an ovule
  2. Describe the structural adaptations of insect-pollinated and wind-pollinated flowers
  3. Investigate and describe the environmental conditions that affect germination of seeds, limited to the requirement for: water, oxygen and a suitable temperature
  4. [Supplement] Describe the growth of the pollen tube and its entry into the ovule followed by fertilisation (details of production of endosperm and development are not required)

Lesson Note

Fertilisation and germination are the bridge between a flower and a new generation of plants, and they decide whether a field of sown seed becomes a crop or rots in the ground. Knowing the exact conditions seeds need is the basis of all sowing, storage and seed-testing in agriculture, and these are favourite topics for practical-skills questions in the exam.
