Algebraic Fractions

Overview

An algebraic fraction is just a fraction with algebra in it, and it obeys exactly the same rules you already know for ordinary fractions. Cancel common factors to simplify, find a common denominator to add, and flip to divide. The only new skill is factoring first so you can see what cancels.

In this lesson you will simplify algebraic fractions and combine them by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Factoring is the key that unlocks every step: once the numerator and denominator are in factored form, the common factors reveal themselves.

Objectives

  1. Simplify algebraic fractions, and add, subtract, multiply and divide them, using factorization where appropriate.

Lesson Note

Algebraic fractions appear throughout higher mathematics: in rearranging formulas, solving equations and working with rates. The fluency you build here, especially the habit of factoring before you cancel, pays off every time an expression has a fraction in it.
