Arrangement Of Elements

Overview

The periodic table is chemistry's master map. Over a hundred elements are laid out in a single grid, and their position alone tells you a remarkable amount about how each one behaves. Learning to read this map is one of the most powerful skills in the whole subject.

In this lesson you will learn how the elements are arranged in order of increasing proton number, what the rows and columns are called, and why elements in the same group share similar properties. This pattern is the key to predicting and explaining the behaviour of elements.

Objectives

  1. [Core] Describe the Periodic Table as an arrangement of elements in periods and groups and in order of increasing proton number / atomic number
  2. [Core] Describe the change from metallic to non-metallic character across a period
  3. [Supplement] Identify trends in groups, given information about the elements

Lesson Note

Rather than learning each element separately, the periodic table lets you group them by shared behaviour. Once you know where an element sits, you can predict whether it is a metal or non-metal, how reactive it is likely to be, and what kind of ion it forms. The arrangement turns a long list into a pattern you can reason with.
