How Did The Second World War In Europe Develop?

Overview

In the autumn of 1939 German tanks rolled into Poland and within a year Hitler controlled most of western Europe. Yet the very speed of those early victories carried the seeds of Germany's later defeat. The story of the war in Europe is the story of how a string of stunning conquests turned, step by step, into overreach: across the English Channel, then across the vast plains of the Soviet Union, German power met limits it could not break.

This lesson traces that arc from Blitzkrieg in Poland to the ruins of Berlin in 1945. You will see why France collapsed in six weeks but Britain held out, why Hitler gambled everything on invading the USSR, and why the frozen wreck of an entire German army at Stalingrad marked the moment the tide turned for good. These are exactly the causes, consequences and turning points that Cambridge examiners ask you to weigh up.

Objectives

  1. To what extent had Nazi Germany gained control of Europe in 1940?
  2. Why was Germany unable to conquer Britain?
  3. Why did Hitler invade the Soviet Union in 1941?
  4. Why was the Battle of Stalingrad a turning point?

Lesson Note

Understanding the war in Europe is not about memorising battles. It is about explaining how the balance of advantage shifted. In 1940 Germany looked unstoppable; by 1943 it was being ground down on two fronts. If you can explain why Germany won early and lost later, you can answer almost any Cambridge question on this depth study, because the same themes return again and again: the limits of Blitzkrieg, the cost of fighting on more than one front, and the moments historians call turning points.
