Web Development Layers

Overview

Every web page you visit is built from three separate layers that do three different jobs: one holds the content, one decides how it looks, and one makes it react. Pulling these apart is one of the most important ideas in modern web development, because it lets a designer restyle a whole site without touching a word of its text, and lets a writer change the text without breaking the design.

In this lesson you will learn the purpose of each layer: the content layer written in HTML, the presentation layer written in CSS, and the behaviour layer written in a scripting language such as JavaScript. You will see why keeping them in separate files matters and how the three fit together to make a single page. This is the foundation that the rest of website authoring is built on.

Objectives

  1. The three web development layers.
  2. Content layer is used to enter the content and create the structure of a web page Presentation layer is used to display and format elements within a web page Behaviour layer is for a scripting language to control elements within a web page.

Lesson Note

Imagine a large company with hundreds of web pages that all need a new colour scheme. If the colours were mixed into every page, someone would have to edit hundreds of files. Because the styling lives in its own layer, one change updates them all. Separating what a page says, how it looks and how it behaves is what makes a website maintainable, consistent and quick to update, and it is exactly the structure the syllabus asks you to understand.
