Equivalent Forms And Factorization

Overview

The same algebraic expression can be dressed in many different outfits. Written one way it hides its secrets; written another, its key features leap straight out. Factorization is the tool that rewrites an expression in an equivalent form so you can read off what it really does.

In this lesson you will rewrite expressions by factoring out common factors, recognizing the difference of two squares, and factoring quadratics. Each equivalent form reveals something useful: a shared factor, a zero, or a hidden structure that the original expression kept out of sight.

Objectives

  1. Rewrite expressions in equivalent forms by factorization to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented.

Lesson Note

Two expressions can look completely different yet have exactly the same value for every input. Choosing the right equivalent form is a quiet superpower in algebra: a factored form instantly shows you where an expression equals zero, and a common factor pulled to the front can turn a messy fraction into a simple one. Reading expressions, rather than just manipulating them, starts here.
