Data Storage
Overview
A computer needs two very different kinds of memory: a fast workspace it uses right now, and a roomy cupboard where everything is kept when the power is off. Choose the wrong kind and your work vanishes when you switch off, or the machine grinds to a halt waiting for data. Knowing how each type of storage works lets you explain why a phone, a laptop and a games console make the storage choices they do.
In this lesson you will separate primary from secondary storage, learn how magnetic, optical and solid-state devices actually hold their bits, see how virtual memory rescues a computer when the RAM fills up, and weigh up the real advantages and disadvantages of storing your data in the cloud instead of on the device in front of you.
