Vocabulary And Properties Of Circles

Overview

A circle has its own vocabulary: radius, diameter, chord, tangent, arc, sector and segment. Knowing exactly what each word means, and the key property that a tangent meets the radius at a right angle, turns circle problems from confusing to routine.

In this lesson you will learn the parts of a circle and the most useful property for problem solving: a tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point where they touch. That single right angle is the key to a whole family of exam questions.

Objectives

  1. Use the vocabulary and properties of circles, including that a tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact.

Lesson Note

Circles appear across geometry, trigonometry and design. Using the right name for each part, and the tangent-radius right angle, lets you bring in Pythagoras and angle facts to solve problems cleanly.
