Rivers Present Opportunities And Hazards For People

Overview

Rivers have drawn people to their banks for thousands of years. They offer water to drink and irrigate, fertile silt for farming, fish, transport routes and power. Yet the same river that feeds a city can drown it, and the same flow that waters fields can carry away poisons. Living with a river means weighing its gifts against its dangers.

This lesson examines both sides. You will study the opportunities and hazards of riverside life, the natural and human causes of flooding and pollution, their impacts, and how flooding and pollution can be managed by hard and soft (sustainable) methods. Two detailed real examples, the Yangtze and the Nile, anchor the management strategies in practice.

Objectives

  1. The opportunities and hazards of living near a river.
  2. The human and natural causes of river flooding.
  3. The impacts of river flooding.
  4. An evaluation of the strategies and techniques used to manage river flooding; including sustainable.
  5. The human causes of river pollution.
  6. The impacts of river pollution.
  7. An evaluation of the strategies and techniques used to manage river pollution; including sustainable.
  8. One detailed specific example to include: • the causes and impacts of a flood for a named river • the strategies and techniques used to manage the flooding of the river; including sustainable.
  9. One detailed specific example to include: • the causes and impacts of pollution in a named river • the strategies and techniques used to manage pollution levels in the river; including sustainable.

Lesson Note

This is where physical geography meets people. Questions here often carry the highest marks because they ask you to evaluate: to weigh advantages against disadvantages and judge whether a strategy is sustainable. You also need a named example you can describe in detail. Learn one flood example and one pollution example thoroughly, and structure evaluations as a balanced argument ending in a judgement.
