Types Of Programming Language, Translators And Integrated Development Environments (Software part 1)
Overview
The processor inside every computer only understands one thing: machine code, long strings of ones and zeros. Yet programmers write in readable words like if, while and print. Something has to bridge that gap. This lesson is about the languages we write in and the translator software that turns our code into something the machine can run.
You will learn the difference between high-level and low-level languages and the trade-offs of each, see how assembly language uses mnemonics and needs an assembler, and learn exactly how a compiler and an interpreter each translate high-level code and report errors. By the end you should be able to choose the right language and the right translator for a situation and justify it like an examiner.
Objectives
- 1 Explain what is meant by a high-level language and a low-level language, including the advantages and disadvantages of each
- 2 Understand that assembly language is a form of low-level language that uses mnemonics, and that an assembler is needed to translate an assembly language program into machine code
