Group I Properties

Overview

Drop a small piece of sodium into water and it fizzes, skates across the surface and may burst into flame. Potassium does the same, only more violently. These are the Group I alkali metals, a family so reactive that they must be stored under oil, and their behaviour changes in a clear, predictable way as you move down the group.

In this lesson you will learn the physical properties of lithium, sodium and potassium, the three trends you must know going down Group I, and the reasoning behind them. By the end you should be able to predict the properties of metals further down the group and justify your prediction.

Objectives

  1. Describe the Group I alkali metals, lithium, sodium and potassium, as relatively soft metals with general trends down the group, limited to: (a) decreasing melting point (b) increasing density (c) increasing reactivity.
  2. Predict the properties of other elements in Group I, given information about the elements.
