Geometrical Terms

Overview

Geometry has its own precise vocabulary, and using it correctly is the first step to every proof, construction and calculation that follows. Knowing exactly what perpendicular, congruent, chord and reflex angle mean lets you read a question accurately and explain your reasoning clearly.

In this lesson you will build a clear glossary of geometrical terms: kinds of line and angle, the language of triangles, special quadrilaterals and polygons, simple solids, and the parts of a circle. Mastering this vocabulary now makes all the geometry that comes later far easier to follow.

Objectives

  1. Use and interpret the following geometrical terms: point vertex line parallel perpendicular bearing right angle acute, obtuse and reflex angles interior and exterior angles similar congruent scale factor.
  2. Use and interpret the vocabulary of: triangles special quadrilaterals polygons simple solids.
  3. Use and interpret the vocabulary of a circle.

Every geometry question is written in this vocabulary, and many marks are won or lost simply on understanding the words. If you know that a chord is not a diameter, that congruent means identical in shape and size, and that a reflex angle is more than a straight line, you can read the question correctly and reason about it with confidence.
