Trigonometry And Pythagoras' Theorem

Overview

Trigonometry connects angles to lengths, making it possible to calculate distances that are impossible to measure directly. Combined with Pythagoras' theorem, it forms the backbone of geometry questions across both Edexcel papers.

You will master Pythagoras' theorem for right-angled triangles, use sine, cosine and tangent ratios to find unknown sides and angles, and at Higher tier extend these ideas to any triangle using the sine rule, cosine rule and the area formula.

Objectives

  1. Know, understand and use Pythagoras' theorem in two dimensions
  2. Know, understand and use sine, cosine and tangent of acute angles to determine lengths and angles of a right-angled triangle
  3. Apply trigonometrical methods to solve problems in two dimensions
  4. [Higher] Understand and use sine, cosine and tangent of obtuse angles
  5. [Higher] Understand and use angles of elevation and depression
  6. [Higher] Understand and use the sine and cosine rules for any triangle
  7. [Higher] Use Pythagoras' theorem in three dimensions
  8. [Higher] Understand and use the formula 1/2 ab sin C for the area of a triangle
  9. [Higher] Apply trigonometrical methods to solve problems in three dimensions, including finding the angle between a line and a plane

Lesson Note

How tall is a building if you cannot climb it? How wide is a river if you cannot cross it? Trigonometry answers these questions by linking measurable angles to unreachable distances.
