Physical And Chemical Changes
Overview
Melt an ice cube and you can freeze the water again. Burn a piece of paper and there is no getting it back. The difference between these two everyday events is the heart of one of chemistry's most useful ideas: the distinction between a physical change and a chemical change.
In this lesson you will learn to tell the two apart, using clear signs such as whether a new substance is formed and whether the change can be reversed. Getting this distinction right underpins almost everything else you will study, from changes of state to chemical reactions.
