Overview

Life on Earth comes in a staggering range of forms, from bacteria too small to see with the naked eye to towering redwood trees and blue whales. Biologists sort this diversity into broad groups based on shared cell structures and modes of nutrition, giving every organism a place in a logical classification system.

In this lesson you will learn how eukaryotic organisms (plants, animals, fungi, and protoctists) and prokaryotic organisms (bacteria) differ in their cell structure and features. You will also explore what makes an organism a pathogen and why pathogens can come from several different groups.

The groups are defined by features such as whether the organism has a nucleus, how it obtains food, and whether its cells have walls.
