Perimeter And Area Of Rectangles, Triangles And Compound Shapes

Overview

Perimeter is the distance around the edge of a shape; area is the amount of surface it covers. For rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids there are simple formulas, and any awkward shape can be split into these familiar pieces.

In this lesson you will calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, and handle compound shapes by breaking them into parts you can already measure.

Objectives

  1. Calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids and compound shapes derived from these.

Lesson Note

Area and perimeter answer everyday questions: how much paint, carpet, fencing or fabric is needed. The skill of splitting a compound shape into simple pieces is one you will use again and again.
