Fertilisers

Overview

Every harvest takes nutrients out of the soil, and unless they are put back the land slowly stops being able to feed crops. Fertilisers are the chemicals that replace those lost nutrients, and they are one of the main reasons farmers can grow enough food for a growing world population.

In this lesson you will learn that ammonium salts and nitrates are used as fertilisers, and what NPK fertilisers are: mixtures that supply the three key elements nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for healthy plant growth. You will see why each element matters and how these fertilisers are made.
