Processors

Overview

Every digital device you use, from a smartphone to a supercomputer, relies on a processor to make things happen. The processor fetches instructions, works out what they mean, and carries them out, repeating this cycle billions of times each second. Understanding how it does this, and what determines how quickly it works, is central to choosing and evaluating any ICT system.

In this lesson you will learn how the central processing unit carries out its fetch-decode-execute cycle, what clock speed really measures, and why the number of cores matters. These concepts appear regularly on both Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the Edexcel IGCSE ICT examination.
