Averages And Range
Overview
An average sums up a whole set of data in a single typical value, and a measure of spread tells you how widely the data is scattered around it. Together they turn a long list of numbers into a clear, comparable summary, which is exactly what statistics is for.
In this lesson you will calculate the mean, median, mode, quartiles, range and interquartile range for a list of data, and learn what each is good for. At Extended level you will estimate the mean of grouped data and identify the modal class, the tools needed when the raw values are hidden inside intervals.
Objectives
- Calculate the mean, median, mode, quartiles, range and interquartile range for individual data and distinguish between the purposes for which these are used.
- Calculate an estimate of the mean for grouped discrete or grouped continuous data. (Extended only)
- Identify the modal class from a grouped frequency distribution. (Extended only)
